The Boston Gay Basketball League is offering a $2,500 scholarship to a graduating high school student in Massachusetts who plans to attend a two- or four-year college, or a post-secondary career school during the 2025-2026 academic year. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who has actively worked to create safer and more inclusive environments for LGBTQIA+ student-athletes in high school or community sports, whether as a role model or an ally. In alignment with BGBL’s mission, students from all athletic backgrounds (with a preference towards basketball), levels of achievement, and areas of contribution are encouraged to apply.
Make sure you meet the eligibility criteria:
You must be a graduating high school student in Massachusetts.
You must be planning to attend a two- or four-year college or a post-high school career school in the 2025-2026 academic year.
You should have worked on making sports programs safer and more inclusive for LGBTQIA+ student-athletes. This can be as a role model or an ally.
A key part of the application is a minimum 400 word essay involving sharing your experience. Here are some points to consider when writing:
How you have been involved in making sports programs more inclusive for LGBTQIA+ athletes. This can include actions you've taken in your school or community, such as starting conversations, educating peers, advocating for policy changes, or supporting teammates.
Your role as a role model or ally: Reflect on how you've used your position to stand up for inclusivity, show support, or lead initiatives that made a positive impact.
Challenges and successes: Don’t be afraid to share any obstacles you’ve faced and how you overcame them. Being honest about your journey will help the reviewers understand your commitment and resilience.
Why this is important to you: Explain why creating a safer, more inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ athletes matters to you personally. How will you carry this forward in college and beyond? This could relate to your own experiences or values.
2 letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your involvement in these efforts, such as:
Teachers, coaches, or school administrators who have seen your impact.
Community leaders or mentors who can speak to your contributions in a broader context.
Be sure to fill out any application forms accurately and completely. Some key information might include:
Personal details (name, contact info, school info)
Plans for higher education (college or career school you plan to attend)
Your sports involvement (how you’ve been involved in athletics, whether as a player, coach, or volunteer)
Be ready to provide proof that you’re planning to attend a college or post-high school career school in the 2025-2026 academic year. This can be a letter of acceptance or another official document such as a commitment letter
May 1st application deadline. The recipient will be notified in June.
